SKYLIMIT DRIVER IN THE SPOTLIGHT : MARC GOOSSENS IN THE USA2010-12-14

Eén ding staat vast. Geen enkele Belgische rijder uit het na Thierry Boutsen tijdperk drukte zo zwaar zijn stempel op de Belgische autosport als Marc Goossens. Na het winnen van het Formule Ford Festival boude Marc zijn eenzitter carrière uit top aan de top van de F3000 en Formula Nippon. Mooie prestaties in Le Mans en Sebring bezorgde hem faam als top prototype en GT piloot. Maar het meest tot verbeelding spreekt het feit dat hij reeds vele jaren professioneel piloot is in de USA. Dit kwam tot op heden veel te weinig aan bod in de Belgische media. Hier een bloemlezing van een aantal van zijn opmerkelijke avonturen in de USA... 
One thing is clear. No other Belgian race driver in the after Thierry Boutsen era has left his marks as hard as Marc Goossens did in Belgium and beyond. After winning the Formula Ford Festival he had a great single seater career moving him to the top of F3000 and Formula Nippon. He became a reliable Prototype an GT driver after great performances on great tracks like Le Mans and Sebring. But most astonishing is the fact that he is a professional driver for years in the USA. Till now the Belgian media gave only a little attention to his overseas actions. Here we bring some of Marc Goossens' extraordinary adventures in the USA...

Na zijn debuut bij de NASCAR Nationwide Cup in Mexico vroeger dat jaar was dit zijn eerste optreden op het hoogste niveau van de Amerikaanse autosport.After his NASCAR Nationwide Cup debut in Mexico earlier that year this was his first appearance on the highest level of USA Motorsports. 

Hoe kwam Marc Goossens aan de roepnaam The Goose? Wel tijdens de race in Mexico naam hij op een bepaald moment de leiding over. De commentator deed toen de uitspraak : The Goose is Loose! En zo werd The Goose geboren.How did Marc Goossens get the nickname The Goose? Well, during his race in Mexico he surprised everyone by taking the lead. The track speaker said : The Goose is loose! Thats how it all started.

Hier een voorbeeld van het enorme spektakel van een NASCAR race. De enorme vlammen onder de Ford Fusion, elke ronde opnieuw indrukwekkend. Marc moest tijdens de race opgeven na een ongeval doordat er iets aan de ophanging afbrak.Here we have an example of how spectacular NASCAR is. The Ford Fusion spits enormous flames every lap. During the race Marc had an accident after something on the car broke. 

Een jaar later kwam hij met deze Toyota Camry aan de start in Sonoma, op de Infinion Raceway. De wagen was het eerste exemplaar dat uit de ateliers van Riley Technologies kwam. Tegen alle verwachtingen in kon Marc de wagen kwalificeren en zich opmaken voor een tweede NASCAR Sprint Cup race.One year later he drove this Toyota Camry at Infinion Raceway in Sonoma. The car was built by Riley Technologies. Against all odds Marc could qualify the car and prepare for his second NASCAR Sprint Cup start.

Toen later dat jaar David Gilliland problemen had om de M&M's Ford af te stellen voor de Sprint Cup race in Watkins Glen werd Marc's hulp ingeroepen. Aangezien Marc toch aanwezig was voor de Grand-Am race deed hij dit even tussendoor. When later that year David Gilliland had issues with the set up of the M&M's Ford  for the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen Marc was asked to help out. As he was there for the Grand Am race he did it in between.

Maar er was natuurlijk meer dan de NASCAR avonturen. De meeste races reed Marc in de Grand Am. Als fabriekspiloot van Riley Technologies deelde hij 2 seizoenen de Daytona Prototype met Jim Matthews. Voor de Rolex 24 uren van Daytona kreeg hij het gezelschap van NASCAR kampioen Jimmie Johnson.  But there was more than the NASCAR races. Most of his time Marc was racing in Grand Am. As factory driver of Riley Technologies he shared the Daytona Prototype for 2 years with Jim Matthews. For the Rolex 24 at Daytona NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson joined them.

In deze cockpit werden overwinningen gehaald in Salt Lake City en Mexico. In this cockpit he drove to victory in Salt Lake City and Mexico.

In zijn rush van 14de naar de tweede plaats op Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal zette Marc zijn tegenstanders af en toe een beetje onder druk.In his rush from 14th to second at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal Marc sometimes put his opponents a little bit under pressure.

Nummer 91 op kop : Dit wil gewoon zeggen dat The Goose achter het stuur zit in Watkins Glen!Number 91 on top : So The Goose must be behind the wheel at Watkins Glen!

Ook in Laguna Seca klom Marc van plaats 15 naar het podium. Hier duikt hij naar beneden in de Corkscrew.Also at Laguna Seca Marc climbed from a lost 15th place on the podium. Here he dives down the Corkscrew.

Afgelopen jaar kwam Marc in actie als Jaguar fabrieks piloot in deze prachtige bolide.The past year Marc was a works driver for the Jaguar squad in this beautiful car.

In 2011 gaan we Marc zeker op de voet volgen want er staat een mooie race in het verschiet. Binnenkort meer hierover.In 2011 we will of course follow The Goose very close because a great race is coming up. More news soon.
