BACK IN TIME - THE AJ COLLECTION : JAPANESE TOURING CARS IN BELGIUM2010-12-23

De Japanse automerken zijn tegenwoordig een vaste waarde in de autosport. Maar toen ze in de jaren 80 in Europa kwamen rijden waren het uitzonderingen. Ze leverden wel mooie prestaties en zijn momenteel vaak de meest geliefde Old School wagens.

We are all used to Japanese cars nowadays. But when the Japanese makes came over 30 years ago they did upset the European racing scene a few times. At this moment those Japanese touring cars all wanted a lot in the Old School scene.

Win Percy en Allan Grice brachten de Nissan Skyline GTS-R voor het eerst aan de start in het Europees Toerwagen Kampioenschap. De Skyline ging verdomd snel en werd de voorbode van de snellere en sterkere R32 waarmee ze enkele jaren ook de 24 uren van Francorchamps mee wonnen.

Win Percy and Allan Grice brought the Nissan Skyline GTS-R to the European Touring Car Championship. The Skyline was strong but his successor, the R32 was so strong that they won the Spa 24 Hours in it and upset BMW, Ford and other Europeans.

Janspeed met ondermeer de betreurde Kieth O'Dor wonnen met de Skyline R32 de groep-N klasse in Spa en was de te kloppen wagen in groep N kampioenschappen.  

Janspeed with as one of the drivers the late Kieth O'Dor won with the Skyline R32 the group N class in Spa. The Nissan Skyline R32 became the most popular car in all European Group N championships.

Honda was in Belgian Procar met hun CRX en Pascal Tillekaerts als piloot oppermachtig in de 2 liter klasse. Daar namen de 1600cc Honda's het op tegen de zwaardere wagens van Peugeot en Opel.

Honda was with the CRX the car to beat in Belgian Procar up to 2000cc although the little CRX only was a 1600cc engine. The great driving of Pascal Tillekaerts did for sure help a lot.

In de 24 uren van Zolder van 1990 stond deze Mazda aan de start met ondermeer Albert Vanierschot. Geluidsproblemen zorgden toen ervoor dat ze de Volvo van Dumortier niet konden kloppen.

This Mazda RX7 started in the Zolder 24 Hours of 1990 with Albert Vanierschot. Noise problems gave them problems so they could not keep up with the Volvo of Dumortier.

Een andere Mazda RX7 die steeds sterk presteerde in de VAS kampioenschappen was dit exemplaar van Symens/Van Kempen/Van Reet.

Maar hier ging het even fout...

But sometimes things went wrong...

Toyota is het Japans merk dat het best vertegenwoordigd is door de jaren heen in België. Hier zien we de Corolla van Cremer/Descampe op weg naar de tweede plaats in de 24 uren van Zolder in 1984.

Tijdens de EG Trophy in Zolder krijgen Europees kampioenen Hoyer/Nielsen een tik van een andere Corolla.

Toyota stuurde regelmatig ook Japanse teams naar de 24 uren van Spa.
