DRIVER IN THE SPOTLIGHT : MATHIJS HARKEMA2011-01-27

Vandaag op Daytona International Speedway kwamen we de jonge Nederlandse piloot Mathijs Harkema tegen. Dit jong talent uit Maastricht maakte vorig jaar furore in het Dutch GT4 kampioenschap en kwam tevens aan de start in de 24 uren van Zolder.

Today we met Mathijs Harkema at Daytona International Speedway. This Dutch youngster had a great season in Dutch GT4 and also competed in the Zolder 24 hour race.

Mensen die hem kennen weten dat Mathijs enkel met het maximale tevreden is. Vandaar ook deze trip naar Daytona om een kijkje te nemen hoe het er aan de andere kant van de grote plas aan toe gaat. Want om een grote carrière uit te bouwen heeft deze 21 jarige nog ruim de tijd maar toch bekijkt hij de mogelijkheden om eventueel binnen afzienbare tijd zijn grenzen te verleggen in de richting van een 100% professionele autosport loopbaan.

People around Mathijs know he is always looking for the maximum. Thats why he made this trip to Daytona USA to watch the Rolex 24 hour race and to lean about US motorsports. To built a great career this 21 year old has plenty of time but he is already looking at all opportunities to become a 100% professional driver.  

Onder de vleugels van Paul Lemmens groeide de jong Mathijs Harkema uit tot een top rijder in de GKS stal, wat hij bekroond zag met 3 Belgische titels en een top-10 plaats in Europa. 

As a driver for the GKS team of Paul Lemmens, Mathijs Harkema became a top driver in karting. He was 3 times Belgian Champion and scored a top 10 in Europe.

In 2007 maakt hij zijn debuut in de Formule BMW in het Duits kampioenschap bij Kaufmann Racing.

In 2007 he made his Formula BMW debut with Kaufmann Racing in the German championship.

Na enkele top 5 plaatsen werd Mathijs derde in het Rookie kampioenschap in een sterke lichting met ondermeer Wittmann en Tambay.

By getting some top 5 positions he became third in the rookie standing behind Wittmann and Tambay.

In 2009 kwam Mathijs uit in het NEC Formule Renault kampioenschap.

In 2009 Mathijs competed in the NEC Formula Renault Championship.

In het Formule Renault seizoen werden meerdere top 10 plaatsen behaald.  

The Formula Renault season was one with some top 10 places.

Na het seizoen kwam er een test met een Formule 3 van het kampioenen team van Frits Van Amersfoort. Maar door zijn lengte besloot Mathijs zijn carrière in de richting van GT's of Toerwagens te sturen.

After the season there was a Formula 3 test with the champions team of Frits Van Amersfoort. But because of his length Mathijs decided to push his career in direction of GTs or Touring Cars.

Samen met Phil Bastiaans vormde Mathijs team in 2010 met de GT4 van Porsche Centrum Eindhoven.

Together with Phil Bastiaans, Mathijs drove the GT4 car of Porsche Centrum Eindhoven.

Hun eerste race besloten ze meteen als winnaar. Mathijs nam de Porsche over van Phil op een tweede plaats en hij stootte tot ieders verrassing door naar de leiding!  

Their first race was immediately a win. Mathijs took the wheel from Phil in second place and he stormed to the lead. Everybody was very surprised he could keep the lead till the end.

Dat die overwinning geen toevalstreffer was bewezen een tweede overwinning en enkele mooie podium plaatsen.

That the win was no lucky shot became clear after another win and some nice podium finishes.

In augustus kwam Mathijs Harkema ook aan de start in de 24 uren van Zolder met Level Racing. Zijn eerste etmaalrace werkte hij af met Niels Cox, Christoff Corten en Ian Gepts. Enkele uren voor de finish moesten ze opgeven terwijl ze op de derde plaats lagen.

In August Mathijs Harkema competed in his first 24 hour race. He shared the Level Racing Porsche with Niels Cox, Christoff Corten and Ian Gepts. A few hours before the finish the car broke while they were in third position.

Het team Bastiaans/Harkema werd kampioen in het Dutch GT4 kampioenschap. Dit bewijst dat de overstap van Mathijs naar de gesloten wagens de juiste stap was. Waar hij dit jaar aan het werk gaat zijn staat nog niet vast, maar als teams willen scoren houden ze best rekening met dit jong talent.

Bastiaans/Harkema became the Dutch GT4 champions. This proves that his switch to tin top racing was the right one. His 2011 program is not decided yet but teams who want to score better make sure to contact this young talent!
